Die erste THE UNITY-Livescheibe ist da. Die Melodic Metal Band sagt darüber: ”Dieses Album ist unsere ganz eigene Reaktion auf den Lockdown. Musikfans wurde die wichtigste Sache in ihrem Leben verweigert – Livekonzerte! Deshalb haben wir entschieden unseren Anhängern genau das zu geben, THE UNITY live! Für uns ist das sowohl ein Salut an unsere Fans als auch ein Trost um all die Shows die nicht stattfanden wieder gut zu machen."
Die deutsch-italienische Gruppe wurde 2016 von Gitarrist Henjo Richter (GAMMA RAY) und Schlagzeuger Michael Ehré (GAMMA RAY, METALIUM, Ex-FIREWIND) formiert. Bei THE UNITY finden wir auch Gitarrist Stef, Bassist Jogi Sweers, Keyboarder Sascha Onnen und Gianbattista ”Jan“ Manenti hinter dem Mikrofon. Im folgenden Jahr kam das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum der Band heraus. Die Fortsetzung ”Rise“ wurde nur ein Jahr später veröffentlicht und 2020 war es schon Zeit für das dritte Werk ”Pride“, wo alle Mitglieder am Songwritingprozess teilnahmen. Ich empfehle all ihre Platten. Sie haben einen vollen, detailreichen Sound und der Sänger hat eine perfekte klassische Hard Rock Stimme mit vielen Nuancierungen. Alle Musiker sind extrem fähig, darunter die beiden starken Gitarristen und ein Keyboarder, der das Feeling setzt und alles miteinander verbindet. Die ganze Gang klang vom Start weg wie ein geschlossenes Team, wuchs aber zu einer noch stärkeren Einheit in diesen fünf Jahren.
”The Devil You Know – Live“ wurde zwischen 2017 und 2020, während Touren durch Deutschland und ein paar anderen europäischen Ländern aufgenommen. Es wurden Aufnahmen von Shows in kleinen Clubs bis hin zu großen Festivals wie dem KNOCK OUT-Festival und dem BANG YOUR HEAD verwendet. Aber um ehrlich zu sein klingt alles wie in einem gemütlichen Club. Ich meine das im Guten, nicht nur weil ich kleinere Konzerte mag, sondern auch weil alles so warm und nah klingt. Songs von allen drei großartigen Alben sind eingebunden, aber die Tracklist konzentriert sich auf Material von ihren Scheiben ”The Unity“ (2017) und ”Rise“ (2018), da seit das neue Album zu Beginn der Pandemie veröffentlicht wurde, für längere Zeit keine Konzerte stattfanden.
Das Frontcoverartwork wurde von Felipe Machado angefertigt, den man von zahlreichen Rock – und Metalgruppen (bspw. GAMMA RAY, BLIND GUARDIAN, LORDS OF BLACK) her kennt. Auf dieser Liveplatte stellt Felipe ”Dave“, das neue Maskottchen vor. Manenti erklärt: ”Es gibt ein englisches Sprichwort, ’Besser ein Teufel, den Du kennst, als einen Teufel den Du nicht kennst.’ Wir finden, dass dieses Motto die Situation in der sich die Welt derzeit befindet, perfekt beschreibt.“ Das Booklet wurde von Alexander Mertsch (DEEP PURPLE, SAGA) designt und präsentiert eine ausschweifende Kollektion von Livefotos. Ebenso Bilder von Fans, die sich definitiv an die tollen Shows der Band erinnern möchten.
Während des Intros ”Revenge“ hört man eine nette Melodie und liebenswertes Anfeuern des Publikums, welches sich steigert als die Band möglicherweise auf die Bühne kommt. Dieser Track ist ein cooler Beginn, der die Atmosphäre aufbaut, und fröhliche Rufe kulminieren zu ”hey!..hey!..hey!..hey!“ Danach ist es als würde man einen Knopf drücken, denn das Tempo zieht plötzlich zum anschließenden ”Last Betrayal“ an. Besonders Ehré hinter dem Schlagzeug kommt in den höchsten Gang. Gianbattista hat eine sehr gute Stimme, welche auch live klasse funktioniert. Die Musik hat genau hier Speed Metal Tempo und du wirst im positiven Sinne durchgeschüttelt. Das Gitarrenspiel ist beeindruckend und lebendig, überschwänglich und energetisch.
Noch mehr Heaviness und Power kommt in ”No Hero“. Jogi’s Bassspiel klingt toll. Stef und Henjo spielen auf fantastische Weise ihre Sechssaiter, sowohl simultan wie auch abwechselnd. Gleitende, hüpfende Gitarrentöne werden während ”No More Lies“ produziert, und ebenso ein liebliches Solo mit beiden der Gentleman. Sweers hält einen herrlichen Rhythmus auf dem Bass. Das Publikum klingt so begierig und enthusiastisch, was absolut wundervoll anzuhören ist. Dich überkommt ein Gefühl, als ob du selbst da stehen würdest. Fröhliche Emotionen wirbeln in meinem Körper umher und ich kann nicht aufhören zu lächeln. Das ist etwas, was ich fast das ganze Album durch mache.
”Welcome Home“ ist ein großer Energie- und Freudenschub. Das erste Mal musste ich bei diesem Track von meinem Stuhl aufspringen und fing an mich in einer Art Glückstanz umher zu bewegen. Hier finden wir sehr geschicktes Gitarrenspiel, mit gleichsam Wärme und Kraft. ”Firesign“ hat ein absolut wundervolles Intro. Onnen kreiert ein mächtiges cineastisches Feeling, das dramatisch und emotional ist. Dann legt die heaviere Metalartillerie los. Hört auch auf die Instrumente im Hintergrund wie Pianotöne, Bass und alle Gitarren. Die kleinen Sounds formen zusammen eine Einheit mit Tiefe und Harmonie. Jan singt nicht nur mit einem klaren Ton. Hier hat er ebenso eine rauere Stimme, die sich von Zeit zu Zeit eingräbt.
Ihr bekanntester Song, das umwerfende ”The Storm“ (vom zweiten Album ”Rise“) ist eine brillante Komposition. Es ist schon ein Klassiker und Muss bei ihren Konzerten. Die ganze Struktur ist fantastisch und die Melodie catchy. Ich liebe den Chorus mitzusingen und wenn ich dabei sitze hüpfen meine Beine so ziemlich das ganze Stück lang im Takt. Ein wundervolles Detail stellt die kurze Pause dar, bevor der Chorus kommt. Dann hört sich der Puls der Musik wie gedämpfte, schnelle Herzschläge im Hintergrund an. Der Effekt ist ein extra Antrieb von Energie und Freude, wenn der Gesang dann mit voller Wucht weitergeht. Das letzte Studioalbum ”Pride“ kam mit einer Bonus-CD, mit vier Tracks von einem anderen Konzert als ”The Devil You Know – Live“. ”The Storm“ war natürlich auch auf der vorherigen und ist immer gut, aber diese neue Liveversion ist klar die beste.
Der Sänger hat sich als Frontmann entwickelt. Wenn ich ihn mit früheren Liveperformances vergleiche, war seine Stimme schon gut und hatte Kraft, aber nun klingt er sicherer in entspannter Weise und hat noch mehr Power. Dazu war ein guter Kontakt mit dem Publikum schon immer da, aber er hat sich auch da ähnlich verbessert. Hier kannst du die spürbare Bühnenpräsenz hören und fast fühlen, diese spezielle Verbindung zwischen ihm und jedem, der da war. Es ist wirklich cool, wie die Zuschauer bei ”You Got Me Wrong“ mitsingen. Nebenbei ist das ebenso eine bessere Liveversion als auf der Bonusscheibe des letzten Materials.
”Jetzt Ist es Zeit für Ein Schlaflied“, sagt Manenti, aber er meint es ironisch. Wenn ich die Musikbox im Hintergrund höre, muss ich loslachen, denn ich weiß was kommt. Er frägt: ”Seid ihr verrückt?“ Jeder versteht dann, dass es ”Close To Crazy“ ist, das nur Sekunden später losdonnert. Die Musik pumpt. Die Gitarren bremsen die Noten ab, gleiten und beschleunigen dann weg. Es ist ein grandioses Lied mit einem eingängigen Chorus, und erneut sowohl phänomenales Gitarrenspiel wie auch eine fantastische Stimme.
”Never Forget“ hat einen Chorus, wo der Grundton etwas zu hoch ist. Es klingt monoton und wird ein wenig schwierig zu hören, aber ist genauso wie in der Originalversion. Andererseits ist es ein sehr gutes Lied, mit einer Melodie, die den Hörer fesselt und die Zuschauer natürlich ebenso. Dieser Track ist der letzte und beinhaltet ein bombastisches Ende mit einem energetischen Ausbruch. Die Musiker quetschen das Letzte aus ihren Instrumenten. Anfeuerungen und Pfiffe des Publikums beenden das Album.
Die Aufnahmen dieses Materials müssen von Anfang an mit einer sehr feinen Qualität eingefangen worden sein, denn es herrscht ein sehr guter Sound auf dieser Produktion. ”The Devil You Know – Live“ ist ein großartiges Livealbum, in einer Art, dass du dir wünschst es wäre länger. Es ist als ob alle Klänge größer würden, mehr Tiefe und Weite bekommen. Man hört beispielsweise die Gitarren mehr. Alles wird klarer und echter, genauso wie es in Wirklichkeit ist. Du bekommst eine authentische Erfahrung und nun will ich sie in echt live sehen. Nicht alle Bands klingen so gut wie auf Studioaufnahmen, aber THE UNITY gelingt das besser und leichter als je zuvor. THE UNITY’s very first live-record is here. The Melodic Metal band says: ”This album is our very own reaction to the lockdown. Music fans were denied the most important thing in their lives – live concerts! That’s why we decided to give our fans exactly that, THE UNITY live! For us this is both a salute to our fans and a consolation to make up for the many shows that didn´t happen.”
This German-Italian group was formed in 2016 by guitarist Henjo Richter (GAMMA RAY) and drummer Michael Ehré (GAMMA RAY, METALIUM, ex-FIREWIND). In THE UNITY we also find guitarist Stef, bassist Jogi Sweers, keyboardist Sascha Onnen and Gianbattista “Jan” Manenti behind the microphone. The following year the band’s self-titled debut album came out. The sequel “Rise” was released only one year later and 2020 it was already time for their third work “Pride”, where all the members participated in the songwriting process. I recommend all their records. They have a rich, detailed sound and the singer has a perfect, classic hardrock-voice, with many nuances. All musicians are extremely skilled, including two strong guitarists and a keyboardplayer that sets the feeling and ties everything together. The whole gang sounded like a tight team from the start, but have grown into an even stronger unit through these five years.
”The Devil You Know – Live” was recorded between 2017 and 2020, during tours through Germany and a number of other European countries. It is taken from shows in small clubs and from big festivals, such as Knockout Festival and Bang Your Head. But to be honest, it all sounds like at a cosy club. I mean that in a good way, not only that I like smaller concerts, but also because what you hear is warm and close. Songs from all three great albums are included, but the tracklist focuses on material from their discs “The Unity” (2017) and “Rise” (2018), since the new one was released in the beginning of the pandemic and no concerts took place for a long period.
The front cover Artwork was made by Felipe Machado, known from his work for several Rock and Metal groups (GAMMA RAY, BLIND GUARDIAN, LORDS OF BLACK, for example). On this live record Felipe introduces THE UNITY’s new mascot “Dave”. Manenti says: ”There is an English saying, ’Better the devil you know, than the devil you don’t.’ We think this motto perfectly describes the situation the world currently finds itself in.” The booklet is designed by Alexander Mertsch (DEEP PURPLE, SAGA) and presents an extensive collection with lots of live-photos. Also pictures of fans, who will definitely like to remember the band’s great shows.
During the intro ”Revenge”, a nice melody and a lovely cheering from the audience is heard, which is increased when the band members probably enter the stage. This track is a cool start that builds up the atmosphere and happy shouts turn into ”hey!..hey!..hey!..hey!” After that it is like pushing a button, because the tempo increases immediately in the following ”Last Betrayal”. Especially Ehré behind the drums puts in an overdrive. Gianbattista has a very good voice, which works just as well live. The music has a Speed Metal tempo right here and you get shaken in a positive way. The guitarplaying is impressive and lively, exuberant and energetic.
Even more heaviness and power comes in ”No Hero”. Jogi’s bassplaying sounds awesome. Stef and Henjo play on their six-strings, both simultaneously and alternately, in a fantastic way. Skidding, bouncing guitar tones are produced during ”No More Lies” and also a lovely solo with both of these gentlemen. Sweers keeps a delightful rhythm on the bass. The audience sounds so eager and enthusiastic, which is absolutely wonderful to hear. You get the feeling of standing there yourself. Happy emotions swirl around inside my body and I can not stop smiling. This is something that I do almost through the entire album.
“Welcome Home” is a huge energy- and joy boost. The first time during this track I just had to jump up from my chair and started moving in some kind of happy dance. Here we find enormously dextrous guitarplaying, with both strength and warmth. “Firesign” has an absolutely wonderful intro. Onnen creates a powerful movie feeling, which is dramatic and emotional. Then the heavier Metal artillery kicks off. Listen to the instruments in the background too, such as piano tones, bass and all guitar. The small sounds together form a unit with depth and harmony. Jan not only sings with a clear tone. Here he also has a rougher voice, which digs deep down from time to time.
Their most famous song, the amazing “The Storm” (from the second album “Rise”) is a brilliant composition. It is already a classic and a must at their concerts. The whole structure is fantastic and the melody is catchy. I love to sing along to the chorus and if I am sitting down, then my legs bounce in pace, through pretty much the whole piece. A wonderful detail is when the micropause before the chorus comes. Then the pulse of the music is heard as muffled, faster heartbeats in the background. The effect is an extra rush of energy and delight, when the singing then continues in full force. The latest studio album “Pride” came with a bonus CD, with four tracks, recorded from another concert than “The Devil You Know – Live”. “The Storm” was on the previous one as well and is always good, but this new live version is clearly the best.
The singer has really grown as a frontman. If I compare with the previous live performances I have heard, his voice was already good and had strength, but now he sounds confident in a relaxed way and has even more power. In addition, a good contact with the audience has probably always existed, but he has very likely improved that as well. Here you can hear and almost feel a noticeable stage presence, this special bond between himself and everyone who was there. In “You Got Me Wrong” it is really cool how the spectators sing along. Besides, this is also a better live version than on the previous material’s bonus disc.
“Now it’s time for a lullaby”, says Manenti, but it is just irony. When I hear the music box in the background, I get full of laughter, because I know what is coming up. He asks: “Are you crazy?” Everyone then understands that it is “Close To Crazy”, which only seconds after will thunder on. The music is pumping. The guitarists make the notes brake, slip and accelerate away. It is a terrific song with a catchy chorus, and again both a phenomenal guitarplaying and a fantastic voice.
“Never Forget” has a chorus where the basic tone is a little too high. It sounds monotonous and gets a bit uncomfortable to listen to, but is also like that in the original version. Otherwise, it is a very good song, with a melody that captures the listener and certainly the spectators as well. This track is the last one and contains a bombastic ending, with an energetic outburst. The musicians squeeze out everything they have left in their instruments. Cheers and whistles from the audience finish the album.
The recordings of the material must have kept a fine quality from the beginning, because it is a very good sound on this production. “The Devil You Know – Live” is an awesome live album, in such a way that you wish it had been longer. It is like all sounds become larger, get more depth and expand. The guitars are heard more, for example. Everything became clearer and more genuine, just as it is in reality of course. You get an authentic experience and now I really want to see them live for real. Not all bands sound as good as on a studio recording, but THE UNITY succeeds easier and better than ever. (Anna)
