Erst Anfang Mai hat der Frontmann der Band MAROON 5, Adam Levine, behauptet, dass Rock Bands vom Aussterben bedroht seien. Lieber Herr Levine, mit der amerikanischen Band THE L.A. MAYBE möchte ich Sie vom Gegenteil überzeugen und beweisen, dass der Classic Rock noch lange nicht tot ist! THE L.A. MAYBE ist eine sechsköpfige Rock 'N' Roll Band, die aus der südlichen Hitze der Carolinas stammt und ihr neues Album „Dirty Damn Tricks“ veröffentlicht hat. Oftmals werden Sie mit Legenden wie GUNS 'N' ROSES, AC/DC, THE BLACK CROWES oder VAN HALEN verglichen – wenn das nicht mal eine große Ehre ist! Und ich kann euch versprechen, dass der Vergleich vollkommen berechtigt ist.
Wenn die Musik eins nicht tut, dann ist es stillstehen. Sie entwickelt sich konstant weiter und greift alte Techniken auf, die im Laufe der Zeit feiner definiert, wie auch verbessert werden. Und deshalb wird auch der Classic Rock niemals aussterben – er verbessert sich lediglich. So sind die Gitarristen Dallas Dwight und Drizzle Silvera unermüdlich, wenn es um einprägende Hooks und mitreißenden Gitarrensolos geht, die auf keinen Fall zu kurz kommen. Die beiden „Twin Guitar Attacks“ ergänzen sich nicht nur, sondern jeder erweitert seine Fähigkeit und legt somit eine Schippe oben drauf. Ihr Sänger, Alvi Robinson, war einer von nur vier Sängern, der 2016 als Ersatz für Brian Johnson bei AC/DC in Frage kam. Wie die Geschichte schlussendlich ausging, das wissen vermutlich die meisten. Es ist eben der Verlust für AC/DC und nicht für THE L.A. MAYBE. Im Gesamtpaket ergibt sich eine Fusion aus altem und neuem Classic Rock, die mit modernster Technik geführt wird und durch modernes Songwriting neuen Schwung in die Szene bringt. Wem ebenfalls Bands wie DIRTY HONEY, GRETA VAN FLEET oder RIVALS SONS gefallen, dem wird auch der Sound von THE L.A. MAYBE gefallen. „Mr. Danger“ war die erste Single, die die Band auf die Menge losließ. Mit beinah 50.000 Klicks auf YouTube konnten sie bei Fans einen gewaltigen Eindruck hinterlassen. Und das überrascht mich auch nicht. Denn die Einflüsse, der mit ihnen verglichenen Bands, sind keineswegs zu überhören! Alvi, dessen Stimme so markant und unvergleichlich ist, fällt sofort auf und lässt keinen Zweifel, wem er ähnelt. Keineswegs klingt er künstlich oder gar produziert. Die Leidenschaft ist unverkennbar. Aber das allein ist noch lange nicht alles. Seine fünf weiteren Bandmitglieder geben alles, was es für einen vernünftigen Rock-Song benötigt. Mit stampfenden Beats, melodischen Keyboard Parts, einem ordentlichen Bass und kreischenden Gitarren wird der Song zu einer Ode an den Rock 'N' Roll.
„Für unsere zweite Single wollten wir eine etwas andere Seite der Band zeigen.“Sucker Punch" ist ein hochenergetischer Rock-Song, der entsteht, wenn man einen riesigen Rockhymnen-Refrain mit einem unerbittlich treibenden Groove kombiniert, etwas Southern Carolina-Hitze einstreut und das Ganze ins 21. Jahrhundert versetzt. Dieser Track ist eine Hymne für diejenigen, die die Flagge der New Wave of American Rock hochhalten. Aber vor allem ist es ein Aufruf an die Rock'n'Roll-Fans aufzustehen, laut zu werden und die Musik nicht kampflos sterben zu lassen." Besser hätte ich es in eigenen Worten wirklich nicht beschreiben können. Wer bislang noch ruhig auf dem Stuhl saß, der wird durch die Energie vom Hocker gerissen! Auch nach mehrmaligen Hören erinnert mich die mitreißende Energie an Songs von MÖTLEY CRÜE.
Wenn die Jungs vor allem eins können, dann sind es packende Hooks und Riffs, die einem so schnell nicht aus dem Ohr gehen. Dafür ist „Oh Sugar“ mehr als nur ein Paradebeispiel. Mit einem Bluesrock Rhythmus verzaubern sie den Hörer zunächst. Dieser steigt im Laufe des Songs immer weiter an, bis er im Refrain zu einem etwas poppigeren Riff verwandelt und den „Zucker“ noch süßer werde lässt. Aber trotz der Pop Einflüsse bleiben sie dem Rock treu. Dies beweist die Band durch ein leidenschaftliches Gitarrensolo, untermalende Perkussion, als auch einen Backgroundchor, der die Leidenschaft und allgemeine Stimmung des Tracks erhitzt.
Als ich das Album erhielt und zum ersten Mal auf Play drückte, realisierte ich nach ein paar Songs, dass mir das Album gefallen wird. Jeder Song ist auf seine Art und Weise besonders. Doch ohne das Album bis zum Ende gehört zu haben, wurde mir schlagartig bewusst, dass „When I’m Gone“ mein liebster Song werden würde. Er sticht nicht nur als Ballade heraus, er ist auch zugleich der längste Song auf der Platte. Mal damit angefangen, dass die Ballade nicht wie sonst üblich über eine vergangene Liebe handelt, war schon ein Pluspunkt. Mir war sofort bewusst, dass hinter diesen Zeilen so viel mehr steckt, als man begreifen und fühlen kann. Und Zeilen wie “I’ve done all I can, oh it’s time to move on, will you remember when I’m gone? oder “Will you raise your voice and sing my song” hinterließen Gänsehaut. Aber da hatte ich auch noch nicht den Gospelchor gehört, der so viel Gefühl und Soul in den Song beisteuerte. Schlussendlich war ich so fasziniert, dass ich den Song auf jeden Fall im Interview mit Dallas ansprechen musste.
„Fake“ ist der vorletzte heiße und energiegeladene Rock 'N' Roll Song des Albums. Den kann man auch mal eine Spur zu laut drehen. Sicherlich gibt es genügend Zuhörer, die passend zum Thema ähnliche Erfahrungen gemacht haben und dementsprechend gewissen Leuten den Mittelfinger zeigen möchten. Passend dazu empfängt „Fake“ einen mit offenen Armen und gibt einem die Stimme, die man nie hatte. Musikalisch, als auch gesanglich ähnelt dieser den Anfangszeiten von GUNS 'N' ROSES, als sie noch jung und wild waren. Genau solche Songs wünscht man sich für heiße Sommertagen bei Konzerten oder Festivals. Allerdings mit freien Shots. ;)
THE L.A. MAYBE ist eine Band, die ihr Genre in allen Details verstanden hat und es vor allem verdient den Classic Rock zu retten! Denn Sex, Drugs and Rock 'N' Roll sollte niemals aussterben (wobei die Drogen so viele gute Menschen zerstört haben)! Sicherlich ein großer Pluspunkt dieser Band ist deren Unabhängigkeit. Es steht kein Label hinter ihnen, dass ihnen ein Label verpasst, sie nach eignen Vorstellung verformt und die musikalische Freiheit nimmt. Genau diese rohe und selbstgeschliffene Arbeit möchte man als Hörer haben, um Individualität in der Musikwelt zu finden. Dies beweist THE L.A. MAYBE unter anderem mit ihrem „Twin Guitar Attack“, dessen Kreativität unerschöpflich ist und mir als Fan unglaublich viel bedeutet. Auch wenn Worte viel aussagen können, sind instrumentale Solos teilweise ein Stück wertvoller. Sonst gäbe es nicht diesen vielen markanten Riffs, die einem im Ohr bleiben würden. Ich bin rundum zufrieden mit dem Album und bin gespannt, was uns in Zukunft noch erreichen wird!(Sarah-Jane)

Only at the beginning of May, the frontman of the band MAROON 5, Adam Levine, claimed that rock bands are threatened with extinction. Dear Mr. Levine, with the American band THE L.A. MAYBE I would like to convince you of the opposite and prove that classic rock is far from dead! THE L.A. MAYBE is a six-piece Rock 'N' Roll band hailing from the southern heat of the Carolinas that has released their new album "Dirty Damn Tricks". They are often compared to legends like GUNS 'N' ROSES, AC/DC, THE BLACK CROWES or VAN HALEN - if that's not a great honour! And I can promise you that the comparison is completely justified.
If there is one thing music does not do, it is stand still. It constantly evolves and picks up old techniques, which are defined more finely over time, as well as improved. And that's why classic rock will never die out - it merely improves. Guitarists Dallas Dwight and Drizzle Silvera, for example, are tireless when it comes to memorable hooks and rousing guitar solos, which by no means fall short. The two "Twin Guitar Attacks" not only complement each other, but each expands their ability, thus adding a notch on top. Their singer, Alvi Robinson, was one of only four singers considered to replace Brian Johnson in AC/DC in 2016. How the story finally turned out, most probably know. It's just the loss for AC/DC and not THE L.A. MAYBE. The overall package is a fusion of old and new classic rock, led with the latest technology and modern songwriting brings new momentum to the scene. If you also like bands like DIRTY HONEY, GRETA VAN FLEET or RIVALS SONS, you will also like the sound of THE L.A. MAYBE. "Mr. Danger" was the first single the band unleashed on the crowd. With almost 50,000 clicks on YouTube, they were able to make a huge impression on fans. And that doesn't surprise me either. Because the influences of the bands compared to them can't be ignored at all! Alvi, whose voice is so distinctive and incomparable, immediately stands out and leaves no doubt who he resembles. In no way does he sound artificial or even produced. The passion is unmistakable. But that alone is far from all. His five other band members give everything it takes for a decent rock song. With stomping beats, melodic keyboard parts, a decent bass and screaming guitars the song becomes an ode to Rock 'N' Roll.
"For our second single, we wanted to showcase a slightly different side of the band. “Sucker Punch” is a high-energy rocker that comes together when you combine a huge rock anthem chorus with a relentless driving groove, sprinkle in some Southern Carolina heat, and bring it all into the 21st Century. This track is an anthem for those who fly the flag of the New Wave of American Rock. It’s about always being told no, but never accepting defeat. But most of all, it’s a call to arms for rock n’ roll fans everywhere to stand up, get loud, and to never let the music die without a hell of a fight." I really couldn't have described it better in my own words. If you've been sitting quietly in your chair until now, you'll be blown away by the energy! Even after repeated listening, the rousing energy reminds me of songs by MÖTLEY CRÜE.
If the guys can do one thing above all, it's gripping hooks and riffs that won't leave your ears in a hurry. “Oh Sugar" is more than just a prime example of this. With a blues rock rhythm they enchant the listener at first. This rises more and more in the course of the song, until it turns into a kind of pop riff in the chorus and lets the "sugar" become even sweeter. But despite the pop influences, they remain true to rock. The band proves this with a passionate guitar solo, underlining percussion, as well as a background choir that heats up the passion and general mood of the track.
When I received the album and pressed play for the first time, I realized after a few songs that I was going to like the album. Each song is special in its own way. But without having listened to the album all the way through, I abruptly realized that "When I'm Gone" would become my favorite song. Not only does it stand out as a ballad, it is also the longest song on the record. Starting with the fact that the ballad isn't about a past love, as it usually is, was already a plus. I was immediately aware that there is so much more behind these lines than one can comprehend and feel. And lines like "I've done all I can, oh it's time to move on, will you remember when I'm gone? or "Will you raise your voice and sing my song" left goosebumps. But then I hadn't heard the gospel choir either, which contributed so much feeling and soul to the song. In the end, I was so intrigued that I definitely had to bring up the song in the interview with Dallas.
"Fake" is the penultimate hot and energetic rock 'n' roll song on the album. You can turn that one up a notch too loud. Surely, there are enough listeners who have had similar experiences fitting the theme and accordingly want to show certain people the middle finger. Fittingly, "Fake" welcomes you with open arms and gives you the voice you never had. Musically, as well as vocally, this resembles the early days of GUNS 'N' ROSES, when they were still young and wild. Exactly such songs you wish for hot summer days at concerts or festivals. But with free shots ;)
THE L.A. MAYBE is a band that has understood their genre in all details and deserves to save Classic Rock above all! Because Sex, Drugs and Rock 'N' Roll should never die out (whereas drugs have destroyed so many good people)! Certainly a big plus point of this band is their independence. There is no label behind them that gives them a label, deforms them according to their own ideas and takes away the musical freedom. Exactly this raw and self-polished work is what listeners want to find individuality in the music world. THE L.A. MAYBE proves this among other things with their "Twin Guitar Attack", whose creativity is inexhaustible and means an incredible amount to me as a fan. Even if words can say a lot, instrumental solos are sometimes a bit more valuable. Otherwise there wouldn't be those many distinctive riffs that would stick in your ear.
