Dir gefällt die Musik von THE DEATH SOUTH oder OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW? Dann solltet ihr zügig eure Finger bewegen und nach der neuen EP von POOR MAN’S POISON suchen! Das amerikanische Quartett ist eine Mischung aus den Traditionen des Folk-Bluegrass, Blues und Rock. Gegründet wurde die Band 2009 in Hanford, California gegründet. Zwar stammen sie aus California, doch es handelt sich hierbei um keine weichgespülte Beach-Boy Band! Mittlerweile hat die Band 3 Alben veröffentlicht, so wie ein Live-Album. Nach einer längeren Pause, um Familie und Karriere zu verfolgen, hat PMP begonnen, neue Musik in Form von Singles zu veröffentlichen. Daraus hervor ging die populäre Single „Feed The Machine“, die über 6 Millionen Aufrufe auf Spotify hat! Am vergangenen Freitag erschien die neuste EP „In The End“, die drei Songs und 5 Tracks enthält.
Ich erinnere mich noch ganz genau, dass ich die Band Ende letzten Jahres zum ersten Mal hörte. Es war ein verregneter und grauer Abend, den ich mit einer Freundin zum Backen nutze. YouTube spiele ihre letzten gehörten Songs ab, bis es „Feed The Machine“ abspielte. Ich würde sagen, dass die Zeit für einige Sekunden stillstand und die musikalische Magie durch den Raum schwebte. Sofort war ich begeistert, gefangen und gierig diese neue Musik kennenzulernen. Zwar kann man ihre musikalische Richtung mit anderen Bands vergleichen, doch die Kombination aus ihrem Sound und dem Sänger ist unvergleichlich und einzigartig. Daher möchte ich euch die neue EP unbedingt ans Herz legen.
Das Intro „In the End“ ist eine Art „Radio-Nachrichtensendung“. Ein Ansager berichtet über verschiedene „Ereignisse“, die sich auf die kommenden drei Lieder beziehen und der die Sequenzen wechselt.
„Good People“ ist alles anderes außer leichte Kost. Der Song beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, was mit den guten Menschen in der Gesellschaft passiert beziehungsweise wohin sie verschwinden. Zeilen wie „If you could help or walk away, if that choice was up to you, what would you do?“ regen nicht nur zum Nachdenken an, sie spiegeln auch die Gesellschaft wider. Eingebettet wird das lyrische Werk durch eine melancholische Mandoline, einer Gitarre, den Harmonien der Jungs und dem Blasinstrument.
Der nächste Track ist auf der ganzen Welt zu spüren. „Give and Take“ beschäftigt sich mit einer hitzigen und angespannten Situation, die zu eskalieren droht. Zwei Fronten existieren, sowie einer Revolution, die in der Luft liegt. Im Gegensatz zum ersten Song ist dieser viel wilder und stärker, um den Inhalt besser zu vermitteln. Dies geschieht beispielweise durch den Chor, den alle Mitglieder zusammen singen.
Für den letzten Track sollte man sich auf jeden Fall die Zeit nehmen, um den Song genau zu hören und auf sich wirken zu lassen. Er ist persönlich, emotional, ehrlich, intensiv und nah am realen Leben. Doch vor allem denke ich, dass er Fans, die sich mit der Thematik auskennen, Kraft und ein Gehör schenken wird. „Stronger Than the Whiskey“ benötigt nicht viel inhaltliche Erklärung, da bereits der Titel alles Wichtige enthält. Ähnlich wie „Good People“ wirft dieser nicht mit gute Laune um sich. Er bewegt sich ebenfalls in schweren Gewässern. Doch der Kern wird zu 100% getroffen und damit entsteht ein perfektes Lied für das Quartett.
„The Struggle“ ist das Outro, was die Geschichte der EP sehr schön abrundet. Ein kleines Mädchen fragt den Vater, ob sie und der Vater die guten Menschen seien. Nun kann man die Antwort für sich interpretieren. Sagt er dem Kind die Wahrheit oder nicht?
Kurz vor Schluss möchte ich noch auf das Albumcover aufmerksam machen. Der einem oder anderen mag der Stil vielleicht bekannt vorkommen. Bereits für „Feed The Machine“ hatte Egor Grositskiy das Vergnügen mit der Band zusammenzuarbeiten. Und auch dieses Mal hat er fantastische Arbeit geleistet!
Nachdem die Band ihre letzte Single „Every Day Is Exactly the Same“ (wie passend ausgesucht) veröffentlichte, hatte ich Sehnsucht nach neuer Musik. Daher kam die EP „In The End“ gerade rechtzeitig. Und ich muss sagen, dass es eine kleine, aber sehr feine EP ist. Die Themen sind zwar alles andere als leichte Kost und auch die Musik ermuntert einen nicht wirklich. Aber irgendwer muss die Themen ansprechen, die wir alle gerne vergessen oder verbergen würden. Themen, bei denen wir gerne wegsehen würden. Und genau solche Themen greift POOR MAN’S POISON gerne auf. Wenn ich Werke aussuchen dürfte, welches unser Jahrhundert beschreibe könnte, dann wäre die EP auf jeden Fall darunter! POOR MAN’S POISON haben großartige Arbeit geleistet, die auf jeden Fall gehört werden sollte.(Sarah-Jane)

The American quartet is a mixture of the traditions of folk-bluegrass, blues and rock. Formed in 2009, the band was based in Hanford, California. While they are from California, this is not a soft-spoken beach boy band! Meanwhile the band has released 3 albums, as well as a live album. After a long break to pursue family and career, PMP started releasing new music in the form of singles. This resulted in the popular single "Feed The Machine" which has over 6 million views on Spotify! This past Friday saw the release of their newest EP, "In The End", which features three songs and 5 tracks.
I remember very well that I heard the band for the first time at the end of last year. It was a rainy and gray evening, which I used to bake with a friend. YouTube was playing their last heard songs until it played "Feed The Machine". I would say that time stood still for a few seconds and musical magic floated through the room. Immediately I was excited, captivated and greedy to know this new music. While their musical direction can be compared to other bands, the combination of their sound and singer is incomparable and unique. Therefore, I would definitely like to recommend this new EP to you.
The intro "In the End" is a kind of "radio news broadcast". An announcer reports on various "events" that relate to the upcoming three songs and who changes sequences.
"Good People" is anything but light fare. The song deals with the question of what happens to the good people in society, or rather where they disappear to. Lines like "If you could help or walk away, if that choice was up to you, what would you do?" not only make you think, they also reflect society. The lyrical work is embedded by a melancholic mandolin, a guitar, the boys' harmonies and the wind instrument.
The next track is felt all over the world. "Give and Take" deals with a heated and tense situation that threatens to escalate. Two fronts exist, as well as a revolution that is in the air. Unlike the first song, this one is much wilder and stronger to better convey the content. This is done, for example, by the chorus that all members sing together.
For the last track, you should definitely take the time to listen carefully and let the song take effect on you. It is personal, emotional, honest, intense and close to real life. But most of all, I think it will give strength and a listen to fans who are familiar with the subject matter. "Stronger Than the Whiskey" doesn't need much explanation in terms of content, as the title already contains everything important. Similar to "Good People", this one doesn't throw good humor around. It also moves in heavy waters. But the core is hit 100% and this creates a perfect song for the quartet.
"The Struggle" is the outro, which rounds off the EP's story very nicely. A little girl asks her father if she and the father are the good people. Now you can interpret the answer for yourself. Is he telling the child the truth or not?
Shortly before the end I would like to draw attention to the album cover. To one or the other the style may seem familiar. Already for "Feed The Machine" Egor Grositskiy had the pleasure to work with the band. And also this time he did a fantastic job!
After the band released their last single "Every Day Is Exactly the Same" (how appropriately chosen), I was longing for new music. Therefore, the EP "In The End" came just in time. And I must say that it is a small but very fine EP. The themes are anything but light fare and the music doesn't really encourage you either. But someone has to address the topics we all would like to forget or hide. Topics we would like to look away from. And that's exactly the kind of topics POOR MAN'S POISON likes to address. If I could choose works to describe our century, the EP would definitely be among them! POOR MAN'S POISON have done a great job, which should definitely be heard. (Sarah-Jane)
