Vor drei Jahren hatten die Finnen ONE DESIRE ihren Durchbruch mit ihrer selbstbetitelten Debütscheibe. Ihre Hitsingle “Hurt“ hat sowohl bei YouTube als auch bei Spotify Millionen Aufrufe und Streams. Nun ist ihr zweites Album “Midnight Empire“ erschienen. Es ist eine würdige Fortsetzung, welche die gleiche Linie beibehält wie der Vorgänger. Sie haben ihren Sound gefunden und machen mit ihrem kommerziellen Stil weiter.
Insgesamt ist es eine schöne, saubere Produktion. Wie bei ihrem ersten Material geben sie uns sanften Rock in großartiger Qualität. Es tendiert mehr in Richtung Pop, doch ein Gitarrensolo hier und da bringt der ganzen Sache einen rockigeren Touch. Viele meiner nicht hardrockenden Freunde werden das lieben, daher denke ich dass sie die meisten ansprechen, egal welches Musikgenre Du magst. ONE DESIRE sind gut in dem was sie tun und auch wenn man sie mit anderen vergleichen kann, haben sie ihren eigenen Klang.
Bereits 2012 wurden sie von Drummer Ossi Sivula gegründet, zuerst als ein Projekt. Ein paar Jahre später traf er den Produzenten, Gitarristen und Songschreiber Jimmy Westerlund. Jimmy war gerade von Los Angeles zurück nach Finnland gezogen und mit ihm zusammen fand die Gruppe eine neue musikalische Richtung. 2016 trat Westerlunds Freund André Linman von STURM UND DRANG der Band als Sänger bei. Kurz darauf komplettierte Bassist Jonas Kuhlberg die Gruppe. Nach dem Release des ersten Werks 2017 folgte eine erfolgreiche Europatour mit ECLIPSE.
Dies ist eine Band mit zwei fantastischen Leadgitarristen, zumindest auf der ersten Scheibe. Neben Jimmy auch Sänger André. Wie viel von den Gitarren Linman bei der neuen Produktion spielt, kann ich nicht sagen, aber es ist hauptsächlich Westerlund, der dieses Instrument spielt, darüber hinaus in einer herrlichen Art und Weise. Das ist das, was meiner Meinung nach alles auf einen besseren als guten Level hebt. Du kannst es eigentlich über die ganze Zeit hören, jedoch besonders herausragend in “Through The Fire“, “Shadowman“, “Heroes“, “Killer Queen“ und “Down And Dirty“.
Ich mache hier eine kurze Pause um ein wenig weiter über das letztgenannte Lied zu reden. Neben dem normalen Schlagzeug ist hier auch etwas, das ich Rhythmusdrums in Form von Keyboards nennen würde. Etwas das ich zuerst als seltsam wahrgenommen habe, da es sich überflüssig anfühlt, aber in der Popmusik heutzutage üblich ist. Von dem Titel “Down And Dirty“ erwarte ich einen etwas härteren Sound, zumindest ein höheres Tempo oder ein bisschen rauer. Sie haben mich mit den Synthdrumbeats á la Pop überrascht und dann klingt es stark nach einer Boygroup.
Ich mag programmierte Musikloops, welche ebenso vom eigenen Gitarristen, Bassisten oder Schlagzeuger der Gruppe hätten gespielt werden können nicht. Auch wenn Du anfängst am Gesang herumzumischen, um ihn perfekt zu bekommen, wirkt es überproduziert und die Authentizität geht verloren. Es kommt nicht oft vor, aber gelegentlich ist es da. André kann wirklich singen, daher ist es nicht notwendig.
Wie auch immer, ein Track der sehr interessant ist und heraus ragt ist “Through The Fire“. Es ist abwechslungsreich und hat eine gute Struktur. Hier finden wir eine andere, spürbare Präsenz als auf dem Rest der Scheibe. Wirklich ein brillanter Song, um wieder und wieder zu hören. Die akustische Gitarre beginnt und nach der zweiten Strophe setzt der energiegeladene Refrain plötzlich mit Macht ein. Meiner Meinung nach die definitiv beste Arbeit des Albums.
“Midnight Empire“ ist durchweg Pop Rock und ich kann es nicht verleugnen, sehr eingängig. In “After You´re Gone“ und “Heroes“ beispielsweise wippt zumindest einer meiner Füße spontan im Takt der Musik mit. Im gerade genannten Stück wurde auch das Keyboard sehr schön gespielt. ONE DESIRE haben etwas, das den Hörer einfängt. Was immer es ist, das Endresultat dieser Jungs ist sehr gut gemacht. (Anna)

Three years ago, Finnish ONE DESIRE got a breakthrough with their self-titled debut disc. Their hit single "Hurt" has millions of views or streams on both YouTube and Spotify. Now the second album "Midnight Empire" has arrived. It is a worthy sequel, which holds the same line as its forerunner. They have found their sound and continue with their commercial style.
Overall, it is a nice, clean production. Like on their first material, they give us soft Rock with splendid quality. It leans more towards Pop, but a guitar solo here and there also adds a rockier touch to the whole thing. Many of my non-Hardrocking friends will love this, so I guess they appeal to most, no matter what genre of music you like. ONE DESIRE are good at what they do and even if you could compare with others, they have their own sound.
They were already formed in 2012 by drummer Ossi Sivula, at first as a project. A couple of years later he met the producer, guitarist and songwriter Jimmy Westerlund. This is a band with, at least on the first record, two fantastic lead guitarists. Besides Jimmy, also singer André. How much guitar Linman plays on the new production, I will leave it unsaid, but it is mainly Westerlund who plays this instrument and above all in a magnificent way. That, in my opinion, is what lifts everything to a level which is better than good. You can actually hear it all the time, but it is especially excellent in "Through The Fire", "Shadowman", "Heroes", "Killer Queen" and "Down And Dirty".
I will now pause and talk a little more about the last mentioned tune. Except the usual drums, here is something I call rhythm drums, in the form of keyboards. Something I first experienced as strange, when it feels unnecessary, but is common in pop music of today. With the title "Down And Dirty" I expected a slightly harder sound, at least a higher tempo and a little more rough. They surprised me with synth-drum-beats “á la Pop” and then it sounds very much like a boyband.
I am not fond of pre-programmed music loops, which could have been played by the groups own guitarists, bassist and drummer. When you also start mixing the singing to get it perfect, then it gets overworked and the authenticity is lost. It does not happen many times, but occasionally it is there. André can really sing, so it is not necessary.
However, one track that is very interesting and outstanding is "Through The Fire". It is varied and has a good structure. Here we find a different, noticeable presence than on the rest of the record. Truly a brilliant song to listen to over and over again. Acoustic guitar begins and after the second verse the energy-filled chorus kicks off. In my opinion, this is definitely the album's best work.
"Midnight Empire" is Pop Rock straight through and, I can’t deny it, very catchy. For example, in "After You’re Gone" and "Heroes", at least one of my feet moves spontaneously in pace with the music. In just mentioned piece it is also played very nicely on the keyboard. ONE DESIRE has something that catches the listener. Whatever it is, the final result from these guys is very well done. (Anna)
