In den 25 Jahren ihres Bestehens haben AVANTASIA bisher neun erfolgreiche Alben veröffentlicht, einschließlich der beiden letzten superben „A Paranormal Evening With The Moonflower Society” (2022) und „Moonglow” (2019). Letzteres stürmte die Charts in Europa, Asien und den Vereinigten Staaten. Hier, zu Hause in Deutschland, erreichte es Platz 1. Die Gruppe hat weltweit gespielt, ausverkaufte Arenatouren und auch Headlinershows auf allen großen Metalfestivals. Das zehnte und neue Material „Here Be Dragons“ wurde von Sänger, Musiker und Songschreiber Tobias „Tobi“ Sammet (EDGUY) komplett geschrieben und komponiert. Das Album wurde von Sammet und Sascha Paeth (unter anderem EDGUY, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, KAMELOT), dem Gitarrist der Band, produziert und aufgenommen. Die Produktion wurde ebenfalls von Paeth abgemischt und von Michael Rodenberg gemastert. Tobias ist ein unglaublich talentierter Songschreiber, der eine große Vorstellungskraft und viele Ideen hat. Wir werden mit einer wundervollen Klanglandschaft sowohl für alte als auch für neue Fans belohnt. Es klingt vertraut, aber gleichzeitig ist es frisch und aufregend. Der Sound ist, wie üblich, eine Tüte gefüllt mit Heavy, Symphonic, Progressive und Power Metal sowie Hard Rock, Metaloper und Rockmusikal.
Der einladende Opener „Creepshow“ klingt für ein paar Sekunden gruselig, dann wird es fröhlicher Hard Rock mit einem eingängigen Refrain und einem wundervollen Gitarrensolo. Der folgende Titeltrack „Here Be Dragons“, zusammen mit GEOFF TATE (solo, SWEET OBLIVION, ex- QUEENSRŸCHE) ist ein Meisterwerk und nimmt mir am Anfang den Atem vor Freude, wenn der Gesang eine Pause macht und dann wieder aufgenommen wird. Sowohl Tobi als auch Geoff beeindrucken mit Stärke, Intensität und Dynamik. Die Musik ist kraftvoll. Das Schlagzeug ist schnell, aber sanft. Das fantastische Gitarrenspielt geht in ein Doppelgitarrensolo, gewürzt mit einem Keyboard über, was ein schönes und angenehmes Ergebnis liefert. Schlagzeug und Bass geben den Extrakick auf dem Weg zum Ende des Stücks.
In „The Moorlands At Twilight“ (mit Michael Kiske, HELLOWEEN), bleibt mir fast der Atem weg, weil es so schnell ist, selbst das Gitarrensolo. Aber es hetzt nicht nur vorwärts. Es gibt immer noch eine Dynamik, die den Hörer gefangen nimmt. Eine andere Arbeit, die im Speed-Metal-Stil davon galoppiert ist, so dass man fast außer Atem gerät, ist „Unleash The Kraken“. Dennoch enthält das Material so einige Drehungen und Wendungen, verlangsamt sich in den Strophen und steckt voller Kraft. Ein anderer Heavy-Metal-Song mit schnellen, energetischen Schlagzeugschlägen kommt gegen Ende die Scheibe in der Form von „Against The Wind“. Tobias Sammet wechselt sich beim Gesang mit Kenny Leckremo (H.E.A.T) ab. Im echten AVANTASIA-Stil hat dieses Stück, wie die meisten anderen, einen fantastische Melodie und ein herausragendes Arrangement. Das Gitarrenspiel ist exzellent. Ich liebe den Text, vor allem die Phrase „And if you don’t like what I do, then it’s not made for you”.
Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT) hat eine sehr gute Stimme, die zwischen rau, kraftvoll und sanft, hellen und klaren Tönen wechseln kann. Zusammen mit Sammet wird „The Witch“ eine herausragende Nummer. Einige Songs sind, entsprechend dem Gefühl, das mir das gesamte Album vermittelt, Wohlfühlmusik. Einer davon ist das fantastische „Phantasmagoria“, in dem der Frontmann zusammen mit RONNIE ATKINS (solo, PRETTY MAIDS, NORDIC UNION) sing. Ein wohliges Gefühl breitet sich in meinem Körper jedes Mal aus, wenn ich ihn höre.
Details und Variationen können überall gefunden werden, wie in „Avalon“, wo Tobias zusammen mit der Metalsängerin ADRIENNE COWAN singt. Im Mittelpart breitet sich ein angenehmes cinematisches Gefühl aus, gefolgt von einem Gitarrensolo. Dann, gegen Ende des Stücks, geht der Sound Richtung Folk Music. Das Album bekommt ein schönes Ende mit dem wunderbaren Song „Everybody’s Here Until The End“. Tobi singt es zusammen mit Roy Khan (ex-KAMELOT). Roy hat eine gute Stimme und singt mit Inbrunst. Das Lied hat eine warme, erhebende Atmosphäre und würde sich auch als Schlussnummer auf einem Konzert gut machen.
Dieses Frühjahr wird die Band zu einer ausgiebigen Tour durch Europa aufbrechen. Ihre bisher größte und epischste Produktion wird versprochen. Man kann sie in Deutschland live sehen am 14. März in Hamburg, am 20. März in Berlin, am 21. März in Bamberg, am 22. März in Bochum, am 28. März in Stuttgart, am 04. April in München, am 05. April in Frankfurt und am 06. April in Köln.
Tobias Sammets fantastisches Songwriting blüht in einem Feuerwerk auf. Ob er die Songs mit demjenigen, der ihn singen würde im Hinterkopf geschrieben hat, weiß ich nicht, aber Tobias hat jedenfalls für jeden Song den perfekten Sänger ausgewählt. Wir finden brillante Gesangsbeiträge von allen Beteiligten, sowohl von Tobi als auch von allen Gastsängern. AVANTASIAs „Here Be Dragons“ ist ein beeindruckend starkes Material, gefüllt mit Magie, das in vielen Charts hoch steigen wird. Sammet hat es wieder getan – ein Meisterwerk geschaffen! (Anna)

During their 25 years, AVANTASIA has previously released nine successful records, including the two most recent superb “A Paranormal Evening With The Moonflower Society” (2022) and “Moonglow” (2019). The latter completely stormed the charts in Europe, Asia and the US. Here, at home in Germany, it reached first place. The group has played worldwide, sold-out arena tours and headline shows at all the biggest Metal festivals. The tenth and new material “Here Be Dragons” was written and composed entirely by singer, musician and songwriter Tobias “Tobi” Sammet (EDGUY). The album was produced and recorded by Sammet and the band’s guitarist Sascha Paeth (EDGUY, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, KAMELOT, among others). The production was also mixed by Paeth and mastered by Michael Rodenberg. Tobias is an incredibly talented songwriter, who has a huge imagination and many ideas. We are treated to a wonderful soundscape for both old and new fans. It sounds familiar, while at the same time it is fresh and exciting. The sound is, as usual, a candy bag of Heavy, Symphonic, Progressive and Power Metal, as well as Hard Rock, Metal Opera and Rock Musical.
The welcoming opening number “Creepshow” sounds scary for a few seconds, then it becomes happy Hard Rock with a catchy chorus and a wonderful guitar solo. The following title track “Here Be Dragons” together with GEOFF TATE (solo, SWEET OBLIVION, ex-QUEENSRŸCHE) is a masterpiece and makes me lose my breath with delight already in the beginning, when the singing takes a pause and then increases. Both Tobi and Geoff impress with strength, intensity and dynamics. The music is powerful. The drum beats are fast, but soft. The fantastic guitar playing leads into a twin guitar solo with a keyboard seasoning, which gives a nice and lovely result. Drums and bass give an extra kick all the way to the end of the piece.
In “The Moorlands At Twilight” (feat. Michael Kiske, HELLOWEEN), I almost lose my breath because it goes so fast, even the guitar solo. But it doesn’t just rush on. There is still a dynamic here that captures the listener. Another work that gallops away in a Speed Metal style, so that you almost get out of breath, is “Unleash The Kraken”. However, the material contains some twists and turns, slows down in the verses and is filled with power. Another Heavy Metal song with fast, energetic drum beats comes towards the end of the record, in the form of “Against The Wind”. Tobias Sammet alternates the vocals with Kenny Leckremo (H.E.A.T). In true AVANTASIA style, the piece, just like most other tracks, has a fantastic melody and a magnificent arrangement. The guitar playing is excellent. I love the lyrics, especially the phrase “And if you don’t like what I do, then it’s not made for you”.
Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT) has a very good voice, which can switch between rough and powerful to gentle, bright and clear tones. Together with Sammet, “The Witch” becomes an excellent number. Several of the songs, just like the experience I get from listening to the entire disc, are feel-good music. One of them is the fantastic “Phantasmagoria” where the frontman sings together with RONNIE ATKINS (solo, PRETTY MAIDS, NORDIC UNION). A lovely feeling spreads through my body every time I hear it.
Details and variations are found a little bit everywhere, such as in “Avalon”, where Tobias sings together with Metal singer ADRIENNE COWAN. During the middle section, a lovely cinematic feeling spreads, followed by a guitar solo. Then, towards the end of the piece, the sound leans towards Folk Music. It becomes a nice end of the album with the wonderful song “Everybody’s Here Until The End”. Tobi performs it together with Roy Khan (ex-KAMELOT). Roy has a good voice and sings heartfelt. The track has a warm, uplifting atmosphere and would also be suitable as a closing number at a concert.
This spring, the band will embark on an extensive arena tour across Europe. Their biggest and most epic production ever is promised. You can see them live in Germany on March 14th in Hamburg, March 20th in Berlin, March 21st in Bamberg, March 22nd in Bochum, March 28th in Stuttgart, April 4th in Munich, April 5th in Frankfurt and April 6th in Cologne.
Tobias Sammet’s fantastic songwriting blossoms into a firework. Whether he has written the songs with who will sing them in mind, I don’t know, but Tobias has at least chosen the perfect vocalists for each track. We find brilliant vocal contributions from all participants, both from Tobi and all guest artists. AVANTASIA’s “Here Be Dragons” is an impressively strong material, filled with magic, that will climb high on many charts. Sammet has done it again – created a masterpiece! (Anna)
