Lasst mich GATHERING OF KINGS für diejenigen unter Euch vorstellen, die noch nichts von ihnen gehört haben.Vor vier Jahren wurde die Formierung dieser Gruppe, die aus zahlreichen schwedischen Musikern von verschiedenen Bands zusammen gestellt wurde angekündigt. Die Erwartungen waren hoch, da es nicht gerade Anfänger sind, von denen wir reden. Ihr gelobtes “First Mission” kam vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr. Der Sound hat seine Wurzeln im melodischen Hard Rock/AOR der Achtziger. Gitarrist Victor Olsson (SAFFIRE) war der Hauptsongschreiber, was er zusammen mit Alexander Frisborg (HELLDOG) auch wieder auf dem neuen Album “Discovery” ist. Am Freitag, den 15. Mai wird dieser von Thomas “Plec” Johansson im The Panic Room Studio produzierte Werk von RN Records veröffentlicht. Das Albumcover wurde von Markus Vesper gezeichnet, einem freischaffenden Künstler und Illustrator aus Deutschland. Vesper kreierte auch das GOK-Logo.
Es fing alles mit Initiator Ron Dahlgren an, der von einem gut produzierten Musikprojekt in der Art von PHENOMENA träumte. Seine Inspiration war deren zweites Album “Dream Runner” und dafür wollte er eine Band mit verschiedenen Sängern aufbauen, bevorzugt ohne wie all die anderen Stimmen in dem Genre zu klingen. Die Idee musste ein paar Jahre ruhen und reifen. Dann präsentierte er sie einer Auswahl an Topmusikern von denen Dahlgren dachte, das sie eine fantastische Einheit bilden würden, mit einer guten Interaktion um von den Hörern genossen zu werden. Sicherlich ist es nicht einfach alle Bandmitglieder mit ihren unterschiedlichen Tour – und Arbeitsplänen zusammen zu bekommen, so dass es ein paar Jahre brauchte, bevor das Debütalbum fertig gestellt wurde.
Man könnte sagen, dass sie wie eine Mischung aus EUROPE und THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA klingen. Die letztgenannten sind gar nicht so überraschend, das Sänger Björn Strid beim ersten Line-Up mitmachte. Er ist nicht beim neuen Album involviert. Dennoch fanden GATHERING OF KINGS ihren eigenen Stil. Etwas, das sie auf dem kommenden Material noch weiter entwickeln werden.
“Discovery” beinhaltet zwölf Tracks, darunter die Singles “Heaven On The Run”, “Moonlight” und “Kiss From Above”. Im letztgenanten Stück werden aus den zwei Backgroundsängern plötzlich drei, denn die Künstler haben es fertig gebracht, den Gründer höchstselbst hinter das Mikrofon zu bekommen. Dieser Mann unternimmt viel in der Musikwelt und zusammen mit seiner Frau Nina betreiben sie ein bekanntes Musikmagazin in Schweden. Das Paar ist ebenso wie Victor Olsson ausfrührender Produzent der Band, von der wir hier reden.
Ein paar Besetzungswechsel haben stattgefunden, aber viele sind immer noch die selben. Neben Alexander am Gesang, hören wir Rick Altzi (MASTERPLAN), Apollo Papathanasio (SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, ex-FIREWIND) und Tobias Jansson (SAFFIRE) wieder. Neu in der Gang ist Jonny Lindkvist (NOCTURNAL RITES), der perfekt passt. Die Schlagzeuger sind die selben wie zuvor, namentlich Jonas Källsbäck (THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA) und Efraim Larsson (SAFFIRE, STREAMLINE). Hier finden wir ebenso Bassist Nalle Påhlsson (TREAT, EASY ACTION, THERION) wieder. Dieses Instrument wird auch von Victor bedient, genauso wie die Keyboards auf der gesamten Scheibe.
GOK feierten eine hochgeschätzte Premiere vor dem Publikum beim Sweden Rock Festival 2019. Lest bitte unser Review von dort. Ein paar Monate später hatten sie auf einem anderen Festival, das sich Skogsröjet nennt Erfolg. Zu Jahresbeginn 2020 spielten sie ein brillantes Konzert in Göteborg. Ich war dort und sah wie die fröhliche Atmosphäre stieg und stieg. Eine superbe Performance, welche ich möglicherweise nie vergesen werde. Mit so vielen talentierten Musikern und Sängern kann es nur richtig sein.
In der Woche nach dem Albumrelease im Mai spielt die Band exklusive Shows an drei Orten in Schweden (Lidköping, Linköping und Göteborg). Alle Melodien aus “Discovery” werden zum ersten Mal in Gänze gebracht und vielleicht das einzige Mal. Dazu werden viele Lieder von “First Mission” versprochen. Es werden fünf Sänger, zwei Gitarristen, ein Bassist, zwei Keyboarder und zwei Drummer auf der Bühne sein.
GATHERING OF KINGS kommen nach Deutschland, um am Indoor Summer 2020 teilzunehmen, welcher in Hamburg stattfindet. Sie freuen sich schon drauf, also verpasse es nicht. (Anna)

For those of you who have not heard of them yet, let me introduce GATHERING OF KINGS. Four years ago the formation of this group was announced, with a number of Swedish artists put together from different bands. Expectations were high, since it was not exactly beginners we are talking about. Just over a year ago came the acclaimed "First Mission". The sound has its roots in the melodic hardrock/AOR of the eighties. Guitarist Victor Olsson (SAFFIRE) was the main songwriter, which he also is on the new album "Discovery", together with singer Alexander Frisborg (HELLDOG). On Friday, May 15, this work will be released via RN Records, produced in The Panic Room Studio by Thomas "Plec" Johansson. The albumcover has been painted by Markus Vesper, a freelance artist and illustrator from Germany. Vesper has also created the GOK logo.
It all started with the initiator Ron Dahlgren, dreaming of starting a well-produced music project, kind of like PHENOMENA. The idea got to rest and mature for a few years. Then he presented it to a variety of top musicians, who Dahlgren thought would be a fantastic unit together, with a good interaction to be enjoyed by the listeners. Of course, it is not easy to get it together with all members different tour- and work schedules, so it took a few years before the debut album was completed.
You could say that they sound like a mix of EUROPE and THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA. The last one may not be so surprising, when singer Björn Strid participated in the first line-up. He is not involved in the new album. Anyway, GATHERING OF KINGS has found their own style. Something they will develop even more on the upcoming material.
"Discovery" contains twelve tracks, including the singles "Heaven On The Run", "Moonlight" and "Kiss From Above". In last mentioned piece, the two background singers are suddenly three, because the artists managed to get the founder himself behind a microphone. This man has a lot going on in the music world and together with his wife Nina they run a well-known music magazine in Sweden. The couple are also, together with Victor Olsson, executive producers of the band we are talking about here.
Some member changes have taken place, but many are the same. Except Alexander on vocals, we once again hear Rick Altzi (MASTERPLAN), Apollo Papathanasio (SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, ex FIREWIND) and Tobias Jansson (SAFFIRE). GOK made a highly appreciated premiere in front of an audience at Sweden Rock Festival 2019. Please read our review from there. A couple of months later they made a success at another festival, called Skogsröjet. At the beginning of 2020 they did a brilliant concert in Gothenburg. I was there and saw the happy atmosphere just increasing and increasing. A superb performance I will probably never forget. With so many talented musicians and singers, it can only be right.
The week after the album release in May, the band makes exclusive shows in three places in Sweden (Lidköping, Linköping and Gothenburg). All melodies from "Discovery" will be delivered live, in full, for the first time and probably the only time. In addition, many songs from "First Mission" are also promised. There will be five singers, two guitarists, one bassist, two keyboardists and two drummers on stage.
GATHERING OF KINGS arrives in Germany to participate in Indoor Summer 2020, which takes place in Hamburg. They are already longing for it, so do not miss this. (Anna)
